Morgan Kervin is not only a talented photographer, but a mentor to other photographers as well. Some say she is generous to a fault.

Like many of us, Morgan is completely self-taught, and she's not afraid to admit that her first camera .... was a disposable! According to her, falling in love with photography was, and is still, "an insatiable urge to document every moment of life." I guess that comes with the territory when you have small children. LOL. In fact, many "photomoms" consider their children to be their inspiration. Which holds true in Morgan's case as well.

Morgan not only offers quality art to her clients, she also offers a variety of services for photographers. Check out her blog for tutorials, workshops, posing guides and more. Also, if you can't find the answer on her blog, simply find her on Facebook.

Ahhhhh ... the "rules" of composition .... a frustrating notion to some ... an artistic necessity to others. But, one thing we all know is, rules are made to be broken ... so ....please don't think that you have to follow these rules consistently. It is more important to express yourself as an artist. Simply think of these "rules" as a set of guidelines that merely assist you in giving your photos more impact.

The Rule of Thirds

Considered by some to be the most important of the Rules of Composition, the rule states that any form of visual art, in this case a photo, should be divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines.... like a tic-tac-toe board. The idea is that the most important elements of the photo should be placed either upon the lines or directly at the intersections. Many photographers consider where the lines intersect to be the "sweet spot". Some feel that placing the most important elements of the photo on the sweet spot(s) makes the photo feel more balanced than centering the subject.

I am a photographer, not an attorney. If you would like legal advice, please contact your attorney. Happy Reading!

Okay so, you've got your equipment, your portfolio is ready, and you're ready to take the next step and open a legitimate photography business. But where do you start? What documents do you need? Do you need insurance? And ... where do you find these answers? Well, after talking to a few dozen photographers, reading a few books, and contacting a few government and state agencies, I think I can finally put together a checklist of all things (or pretty close) needed to get your business up and running .... legally.

(1) Form: First and foremost you need to decide what form of business will make the most sense for you and your business needs. **There are three basic forms of business: Corporations, Partnerships, and Sole-ownership (sole-proprietorship). Each form of business has variations that must be considered when making your decision. Do some research to determine which is right for you.

(2) Licensing: In order to run a business legally, most cities will require that you have either a business license, an assumed (ficticious) name permit, or a combination of the two.** A ficticious name permit, or DBA, is usally required when the name of your business does not include your legal surname. In some states, such as Texas, the permit doubles as a business license. And ... in other states, running a photography business does not require a license at all. Contact your local city hall to find out what type of licensing is required for your area.

(3) Federal Taxes: A Federal Tax ID number (EIN) is required for all businesses. This is how the IRS idientifies you as business entity. If you are a Sole Proprietership your SS number can be used as the EIN. You can apply for an EIN for free at http://www.irs.gov/

(4) State Taxes: **If you are starting a business in a state that charges sales tax you may be required to charge, collect, and pay sales tax. This means that you will also need a Resale Number, also known as a State Tax ID. There are some exceptions. **For more information contact the State Board of Equilization office or check your state's website. Remember: When getting paid for a job, and you charge sales tax, this is NOT YOUR MONEY! You will be required to file with your state and pay these taxes either yearly or quarterly, depending on the state your in and the size of your business.

(5) Business Account: Do you need to open a seperate checking account for your business? YES. Opening a seperate bank account for your business does two things: (1) It keeps you organized .... your accountant will thank you ... even if YOU are the accountant (2)** It proves to the IRS that you are serious about your business and that you are working toward making a profit. Check with your bank to determine what type of checking account is best for you and your business.

(6) Business Insurance: Business insurance is highly recommended no matter how big or small your business may be. You have spent a ton of money on equipment, right? You want it to be protected, right? Get Insured! Most insurance companies will cover all of your photography equipment as well as offering you liability to protect yourself ... in case a client was to get injured at your studio or by some of your equipment. USAA offers small business insurance. If you are a member of the PPA they can also direct you in the right direction. You can also contact your current insurance provider.

There you have it. Don't have all of this yet? .... Don't freak out. It's okay. Everyone starts somewhere. Take a breathe, collect your thoughts, and then start making some phone calls. You'll be up and running in no time. Remember: There are different requirements for every state, county, and city. Please contact your local government offices to confirm exactly what is needed for your area. Hope this helps!
I am playing tug of war between Blogger and Weebly. I can't decide which site I like better for my blogging needs. If I could figure out how to put drop down menus on my tab bar in Blogger I would def be a Blogger lady for life. That being said ...
Let me tell you ... it was HOT! Aliyah is so personable and very good at making her clients feel comfortable in their own skin. It was also fun, educational, and inspirational to see how another photographer rocks their camera. As a matter of fact ... here is a pullback of Aliyah in her element.

TIP: If you ever have a chance to work with another photographer on a shoot ... do it! At first I thought it would be awkward and tense working with my competition, but it was actually a very fun, inspirational, and educational experience! We played off of eachothers' ideas and talents and came up with some really great ideas and poses. I hope I get to do something like this again sometime soon.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15539417930116217205noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-751283231736228476.post-68847716028331645482010-12-15T19:58:00.000-08:002010-12-15T19:58:09.575-08:00The Daily Polaroid

I think this one speaks for itself.
We've read their ads on Craigslist
*
*
" 1 Hour Photo Session $25!! CD of ALL IMAGES from your session Included!" We've seen their posts on Facebook.
*
*
Anonymous Photography: Print Packages starting at just $30! Incudes 6 8x10's, 4 5x7's, 20 Wallets, and a CD with ALL images from your session! Book your session today!
*
*
And ... more than likely ... a client has referenced a "cheap" photographer's prices to you in an attempt to make you feel like you are charging TOO MUCH for your talent and hard work. Yes folks, it has happened to us all. And .. chances are that the majority of us have been "cheap" photographers at some point in our careers as well. Maybe you still are and would like to know how to price yourself at what you're really worth. Well, I can't help you there, but, you can check out Easy as Pie to start you in the right direction.

Today's post is for those photographer's who have finally realized that they are worth more than pennies on the hour, established their pricing (or are pretty darn close)and are now wondering how to compete with those photographers that are making .29 cents an hour. I may not be a marketing genius, but I think I'll take a stab at it.

The Scenario: A potential client calls you ... and is interested in a session ... but knows Anonymous Photography's session fee is only $25 and they include a CD of ALL images from their session with a copyright release. The client wants you to match those prices or they will go to Anonymous Photography for their custom photography instead of you. Your first reaction is probably along the lines of, "I don't really give a hoot ... go to the other photographer." Don't give up just yet. Try these three little tips before releasing your potential into the land of bad fauxtography.

1.Let the potential client know that in the land of custom photography .... you get what you pay for. Look at the "cheap" Photographer's page together. Compare your work with theirs. I mean ... let's face it ... if the competitor is only charging $25 dollars (or however much)for their work there's a really good chance that it's worth $25. Get my drift?

2. Make it personal. Let the client know that you will work with the client from the time they book their session until they have their quality photos in hand. Custom photography is an experience. Make them feel special. Let them know that once they book their session you will send them tips on how to dress for their session. Ask them if they have any ideas on where they would like to shoot. Be friendly. A people person. Professional Photographers have people skills. Let them shine! Trust me, your potential client will notice the difference in professionalism and service compared to the "competion".

3. Let the potential client know you work with top of the line equipment, and, your photos are printed by a professional print company so you are able offer them the best quality prints and photo products in the business. Mention a few of your specialty products (albums, brag books, etc). Digital Copies are nice, but they don't really compare to a quality framed photo. Don't forget to mention that all of your photos are enhanced for color quality, sharpness, and their overall appearance ensuring that they, the client (s), will be able to enjoy their photos for years to come.

Simply point out the reasons why YOUR services are an INVESTMENT. Of course, you will still have those inquiring potentials that are simply shopping for a deal, and that's okay! Let them go. You want clients that are willing to invest in your artwork. These will be the clients that value your work and will come back time and again ... they might even send you some referrals. ;)

Hope This Helps. Have a Great Night!Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15539417930116217205noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-751283231736228476.post-66574833257272547752010-12-14T13:24:00.000-08:002010-12-14T13:24:36.750-08:00Daily PolaroidSorry I missed yesterday. A work, kiddies, Walmart cocktail kept me busy until bedtime. One of Kaylin's favorite books ever is The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. She belted out on of those very hearty childlike giggles that makes you smile too ... even if you're having the worst day ever.
to be inspired. After spending all my morning, and afternoon hours editing a wedding (which by the way I am running SUPER late on) I scrounged up some chicken and some cherries and made chicken n' dumplins with cherry cobbler ... and ... when the cobbler was hot bubbly delicious out of the oven it asked me to take it's picture.
